SSE Energy Solutions' Green Electricity and Green Gas received the independent EcoAct verification and assurance.

The renewable electricity generated from SSE’s own hydro plants and wind farms and then supplied to our customers is already backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). And the renewable gas we provide to customers is backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs). But at SSE Energy Solutions, it’s important that we have third-party verification to give our customers additional credibility when it comes to reporting their Scope 2 market-based emissions.

EcoAct is an international climate consultancy and a CDP Accredited Provider. As part of a rigorous assurance process, EcoAct assessed the environmental claims of SSE’s Green Electricity and Green Gas products against the GHG Protocol reporting and quality criteria. They analysed our REGO-backed product specifications and evaluated our REGO balance for the most recent Fuel Mix Disclosure period. Our design and operation processes, risk management and data processing for our renewable gas and electricity were also tested and confirmed by EcoAct.

This independent verification has come at a crucial point in the country’s journey to net zero, as more businesses and organisations commit to net zero targets and recognise the role renewable energy plays in the transition. Research conducted by EcoAct in 2022 found that 77% of FTSE 100 companies are purchasing at least some renewables to power their operations. In response to the ongoing climate crisis and the urgent goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, EcoAct anticipate this demand will continue to grow. They believe the transition to renewable energy and delivering on emissions reductions is the most important indicator of corporate climate progress on the journey to net zero.

An increasing number of companies, large and small, are seeking ways to reduce their carbon emissions and become more sustainable, as the UK government tasks us collectively to hit net zero by 2050. At SSE Energy Solutions, we’re committed to supporting businesses and organisations on their journey to net zero.

As well as our renewed EcoAct certification, our four core 2030 business goals, aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), have been upweighted to drive faster decarbonisation across the next decade. Our Net Zero Acceleration Programme has been upgraded to reflect the increased investment and new projections. Under the Net Zero Acceleration Programme 'Plus', we’re investing around £10m a day in the infrastructure needed for net zero and energy security, compared to £7.5m a day under previous plans.

"We’re finding that more and more of our large industrial customers are keen to explore bigger and more innovative low carbon energy solutions, with many of them speaking to us about corporate power purchase agreements. Even the smallest of companies are keen to do what they can to reduce their carbon footprint. And having renewed EcoAct certification gives our customers peace of mind that our environmental credentials have been independently verified." David Holmes, Sales Director.

A spokesperson from EcoAct commented on the partnership, saying: ‘SSE Energy Solutions has received the independent EcoAct verification and assurance for the seventh year in a row. As well as EcoAct assurance, renewable electricity generated from SSE’s own hydro plants and wind farms is already backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) and renewable gas is backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs)".
