Our Green Electricity has independent EcoAct verification for another year

SSE Energy Solutions' Green Electricity obtains the independent EcoAct verification and assurance.

Our renewable electricity we supply to our customers – generated by our own wind and hydro farms - has been verified and assured by EcoAct.

We can also announce that our Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) has also successfully achieved EcoAct verification for the very first time! Our SSE CPPA offering perfectly complements our SSE Green and SSE Next Generation products and this achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation of our incredible teams.

EcoAct, a wholly owned subsidiary of Schneider Electric, is an international climate consultancy and a CDP Accredited Provider, helping businesses to succeed in their climate ambitions. As part of a rigorous assurance process, EcoAct assessed the environmental claims of SSE’s renewable electricity products against the GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) reporting and quality criteria. They analysed our REGO-backed product specifications and evaluated our REGO balance for the most recent Fuel Mix Disclosure period. Our design and operation processes, risk management and data processing for our renewable electricity were also reviewed and validated by EcoAct.

This certification validates the quality of our products and further reinforces our commitment to sustainable energy and our net zero ambitions. Our renewable electricity is already backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs), providing our customers extra reassurance and credibility when reporting Scope 2 emissions for their purchased electricity. This supports customers in reporting zero market-based Scope 2 emissions for their electricity consumption, in accordance with the GHG Protocol.

As well as our renewed EcoAct certification, under the Net Zero Acceleration Programme ‘Plus’, we’re investing around £10m up to 2027 in the infrastructure needed for net zero and energy security. As part of this, we’re developing the world's largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank. In 2023, it began producing electricity for British homes and businesses marking a major milestone for the offshore wind industry and the transition to a cleaner, more secure energy system. Once complete, Dogger Bank's world-record-beating 3.6GW capacity will have 277 turbines, providing enough clean energy to power six million homes annually*.

We are delighted that for the 8th year in a row, our renewable energy has been accredited with EcoAct certification. This year the verification also includes our Corporate Power Purchase agreements and with such large renewable assets, such as Dogger Bank being online, it can make a massive difference to businesses of all sizes in reducing their carbon footprint. We speak to businesses across all sectors and recognise how important it is to have security in the knowledge of our environmental credentials, particularly how it affects their own Net Zero ambitions so we are proud to advise we can support this once again.

EcoAct have previously assured SSE’s green gas products to ensure alignment with GHG Protocol (GHGP) requirements. Guidance on market-based accounting for biomethane certificates has been removed from the GHG Protocol.

The GHGP are undertaking a stakeholder engagement process, to inform a decision on the use of these certificates [1]. The outcome of this process will be reflected in the updated GHG Protocol guidance documents and standards, to be released in 2025/2026.

Due to this uncertainty, EcoAct have decided that in the interim period we will not assure any green gas products until there is clarity on this topic. EcoAct’s decision bears no reflection on the management or implementation of SSE’s green gas products, nor its renewable electricity products which EcoAct has continued to assure.

In the absence of guidance, the GHGP have stated “companies purchasing certificates may wish to consult with their auditors and consider rules provided by relevant target-setting programs or applicable regulatory schemes in their jurisdiction(s) on how to report these purchases in their reports, while ensuring full transparency and following all GHG accounting and reporting principles [1].”
