The importance of local flexibility
-
The way we generate and use electricity is changing and we need to ensure the electricity network can support the connection of low carbon technologies without performing expensive network upgrades that are paid through electricity bills.
-
In the effort to keep energy affordable Local Flexibility uses the existing network capacity more efficiently.
-
Local Flexibility is a solution that provides customers with the opportunity to change how much they use and when to better manage network capacity managed by the Distribution System Operators (DSO)
-
These changes can help balance the demand on the network so there is enough electricity at a lower cost.
Getting ready to participate
-
If your business can change its energy demand profile with no impact on day-to-day operations, then this could be an opportunity for you.
-
All forms of flexibility are encouraged to participate, EV charging, battery storage, demand reduction to name but a few. The minimum requirement being 10kW.
-
The remuneration customers receive is depends on where they are based in the country, as well as the quantity, speed, and duration they can shift their electricity use.
-
If your organisation has different sites across the United Kingdom they could be in a different Distribution System Operators zone (DSO). Different DSO’s submit flexibility needs through tenders which are released throughout the year.
-
Businesses can offer bids for these tenders which can range from day ahead to 7 years in advance.
